Why do I need a mouthguard?

Sporting accidents are one of the most common causes of mouth injury. Every year thousands of people, children and adults suffer injuries to their mouth and teeth that could have been avoided or minimised by wearing a protective custom fitted mouthguard. Injuries resulting in broken or lost teeth are not only painful but expensive. Restoring or even replacing teeth far exceeds the cost of a mouth guard.

Cushions teeth

Many contact sports and sports involving the use of hard objects such as sticks represent a serious hazard to teeth.

Broken or even knocked out teeth can ruin your smile.

Not only that, the cost of crowns or implants to restore teeth is many times more than the outlay for a mouthguard.

Protects jaw joint

The Jaw joint is vulnerable to impacts to the chin. These injuries can lead to problems chewing and also headaches.  A well fitting custom mouthguard will help absorb the forces that can damage this delicate joint.

Protects soft tissue

Impacts to the mouth can lead to cut lips and damage to the tissue inside the mouth. The mouthguard cushions the pressure of the teeth against the lips and cheeks in the event of a blow from outside. This can happen in a basketball match not just in the boxing ring.

Helps reduce concussion

Its not often appreciated that a mouthguard can help protect against concussion as it absorbs the shock of a powerful impact to the Jaw which can be transmitted up into the skull. If you play a sport where there is a risk of a heavy blow to the jaw then a mouthguard is a must.
